Guardiola Addresses Confrontation and Reflects on City s ChallengesGuardiola Addresses Confrontation and Reflects on City s Challenges

Pep Guardiola has expressed regret over his confrontation with a cameraman following Manchester City’s Premier League defeat against Newcastle on Saturday.

The match, which ended in a 2-1 loss for City at St James’ Park, was marred by contentious officiating, including a disputed penalty, a handball claim, and a controversial offside decision. This left Guardiola visibly frustrated at the conclusion of the game.

In his post-match remarks, Guardiola addressed the incident, stating, “I apologized. I feel embarrassed and ashamed when I see it. I don’t like it. I apologized to the cameraman immediately. I am who I am. After 1,000 games, I’m not a perfect person; I make huge mistakes. The reason I act this way is that I want to defend my team and my club.”

The match also witnessed several heated exchanges among players. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was escorted down the tunnel, while Newcastle midfielder Joelinton required restraint from his manager, Eddie Howe. Guardiola also had a discussion with Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães.

“We have known Bruno for many years, and we always talk after games, whether at the Etihad or elsewhere. I don’t know what went wrong this time. Our paths constantly cross, and I have a good relationship with him. I am an emotional person; I enjoy expressing myself with my hands and arms,” Guardiola elaborated.

Looking forward, Manchester City is set to host Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday, aiming to secure their position in the top eight as they pursue a pathway to the knockout stages. This match will mark Guardiola’s 100th game as City’s manager in the competition, a milestone he acknowledges with a mix of pride and reflection.

“I realize I’m getting older. Every weekend is a milestone,” Guardiola remarked, emphasizing Manchester City’s status as the only English club to qualify for the past 14 Champions League tournaments. “Every season we have been there, and hopefully, next season, we will be as well.”

He added, “It’s special for the players, managers, and everyone involved. Competing against the best teams in Europe is a remarkable experience, offering prestige and financial benefits to the club.

“While there have been disappointments, particularly in the knockout stages, we have consistently performed well in the group phases. Good and bad moments shape a team and a club; the journey is not always straightforward.”

Last season proved difficult for City, as it marked the first time in eight years without a major trophy. They were eliminated in the Champions League play-offs, finished third in the Premier League, and lost to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.

Defender Josko Gvardiol described it as the worst season of his career, stating, “It was painful. I struggled to sleep at night, seeking solutions to help the team and the club overcome this situation. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but I am relieved that it is behind us and that we have recovered well.”
