omidbasir- MANCHESTER, England — Idrissa Gueye, the Everton midfielder, was dismissed from the match just 13 minutes into their Premier League encounter with Manchester United on Monday, following an incident where he struck teammate Michael Keane.

The confrontation unfolded when referee Tony Harrington observed Gueye hitting Keane in the face during a dispute early in the first half at Old Trafford. This altercation was sparked by a misplaced pass from Gueye to Keane within Everton’s penalty area, which allowed Bruno Fernandes to create a scoring opportunity.

Referee Harrington promptly issued a red card to Gueye, who had to be restrained by teammates Jordan Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye as he attempted to continue his argument with Keane.

According to the Premier League Match Centre, “The referee’s decision to issue a red card to Gueye for violent conduct was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, as the action was deemed a clear strike to Keane’s face.”

This incident compelled manager David Moyes to make a second tactical adjustment, coming just three minutes after Seamus Coleman had to leave the pitch prematurely due to injury, marking his first Premier League start of the season.

Such occurrences of teammates clashing on the field are not unprecedented. In 2005, Newcastle United players Lee Bowyer and Kieran Dyer faced off during a match against Aston Villa, resulting in both being shown red cards. Similarly, Blackburn Rovers players David Batty and Graeme Le Saux were involved in a heated dispute during a Champions League match against Spartak Moscow in 1995.
