Jess Fishlock Signs One-Year Contract with Seattle Reign FC, Reflects on Career and Future

omidbasir- Jess Fishlock, the prominent midfielder for Seattle Reign FC, has recently announced her retirement from international duty with Wales after two decades of service. However, her journey in club football is far from over, as she has signed a new one-year contract to remain with the Reign through 2026, which will signify nearly 14 years of dedicated play in Seattle.

Upon returning from the UEFA Women’s Euro Championship, Fishlock expressed a renewed sense of purpose and aspiration. “When I came back from the Euros, I just felt a little different,” she shared with ESPN. “Something had shifted, perhaps in what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. I still possess an unwavering competitive spirit, which I consider a gift. Even after 14 years, I remain determined to bring a championship to Seattle.”

Notably, Fishlock is the only player in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) still active with her original team since the league’s inception in 2013. Although longtime teammate Lauren Barnes has also been with the Reign since the beginning, she retired at the conclusion of the 2025 season, during which the Reign were eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Orlando Pride.

Among the few remaining players from the inaugural season, Chicago Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and Angel City forward Sydney Leroux have also played for multiple teams throughout their careers. Naeher has yet to make a public commitment to continue playing, while Leroux took a mental health leave in 2025.

Fishlock has been pivotal to the Reign’s success, contributing significantly during their championship-winning seasons in 2014 and 2015 and earning the NWSL MVP title in 2021. With 48 goals and 30 assists, she holds the record for the most goal contributions in the club’s history.

As she approaches her 39th birthday in January, Fishlock led the Reign in scoring in 2025, netting six goals and providing two assists. She noted a sense of rejuvenation at the start of the 2025 season amidst a transition within the team and welcomed the influx of young talent along with new ownership.

Reflecting on her physical state, Fishlock emphasized the importance of maintaining her body to keep pace with her mental acuity. “For me, it’s always been about my body. My football knowledge and experience will always be there, but the question is whether my body can keep up with my mind. So far, it has,” she remarked.

The Reign organization has supported Fishlock in managing her physical condition, allowing her to take necessary breaks, which she attributes to her longstanding relationships within the Seattle community.

“A one-year deal is ideal for me, as it allows me to continuously evaluate my body’s performance,” Fishlock stated.

Reign head coach Laura Harvey praised Fishlock’s unique insights and tactical awareness, highlighting her ability to adapt in crucial moments and her leadership qualities that inspire teammates.

Fishlock announced her retirement from international play last month after leading Wales to the final round of the Women’s European Championship for the first time in their history. She became the oldest goalscorer in Women’s Euro history after scoring Wales’ inaugural goal in the tournament.

Despite contemplating a continued international career, Fishlock feels invigorated focusing solely on her club, marking a new chapter in her professional journey.

Over her career with the Reign, Fishlock has experienced the team’s highs—three NWSL Shields—and lows, including three losses in NWSL Championship matches. She has witnessed the organization navigate various challenges, including venue changes and shifts in ownership.

Her connection to the club runs deep, and she believes that enduring this journey has made her potential successes even more meaningful. “There’s something special about experiencing this journey with a singular club, going through highs and lows, and rebuilding. It enhances the emotional stakes of both triumphs and setbacks,” she explained. “Since moving to Seattle, I have never wanted to leave; I aspire to build my entire career here because of the profound significance it holds for me.”
