omidbasir- MANCHESTER, England — Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye faced expulsion for violent conduct just 13 minutes into their Premier League match against Manchester United on Monday after striking teammate Michael Keane.

The incident occurred when referee Tony Harrington observed Gueye hitting Keane in the face during a dispute following a misplaced pass from Gueye inside Everton’s penalty area, which had allowed Bruno Fernandes a scoring opportunity.

Harrington promptly issued a red card to Gueye, who needed to be restrained by Jordan Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye as he attempted to further argue with Keane.

According to the Premier League Match Centre, the decision to issue a red card was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, with the action classified as a clear strike to Keane’s face.

This incident necessitated a second reshuffle for David Moyes, occurring just three minutes after Seamus Coleman had to exit the match due to injury, marking his first Premier League start of the season.

At the time of Gueye’s dismissal, the score was level at 0-0. However, shortly thereafter, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall capitalized on the situation, putting the visitors ahead 1-0 with a beautifully curled shot from the edge of the penalty area.

This is not the first instance of teammates clashing on the pitch. In 2005, Newcastle players Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were involved in a notable confrontation during a match against Aston Villa, both receiving red cards. Additionally, Blackburn Rovers’ David Batty and Graeme Le Saux had a fiery disagreement during a Champions League match against Spartak Moscow in 1995.
