omidbasir- Eintracht Frankfurt’s ongoing defensive dilemmas were prominently displayed during the Bundesliga ‘Top Spiel’ match against Köln on Saturday night. The team’s difficulties in conceding goals extend beyond their defensive line, with goalkeeper Michael Zetterer particularly scrutinized for his performance on Köln’s opening goal. Nevertheless, head coach Dino Toppmöller remains steadfast in his decision to retain the 30-year-old Zetterer as the starting goalkeeper.

Frankfurt acquired Zetterer from Werder Bremen this summer following a surprising transfer of squad captain Kevin Trapp to Paris FC. The club’s intention was to nurture young Brazilian keeper Kaua Santos as their new number one, prompting Trapp to request a transfer after recognizing the shift in team dynamics.

In Zetterer, the RheinMainAdler secured a seasoned goalkeeper who felt he was being overshadowed by a promising newcomer. Zetterer has consistently stated that he did not join Werder Bremen to serve as a backup for Kaua Santos. With Santos struggling upon his return from injury, Zetterer’s aspirations were ultimately fulfilled.

Santos made his comeback on matchday four but faced significant challenges, conceding an alarming 18 goals across four league matches and one Champions League fixture. Following this performance, Toppmöller decided to reinstate Zetterer as the starting goalkeeper.

Although Zetterer also conceded five goals in a match against Liverpool in the UCL, he has managed to secure three clean sheets in seven matches across all competitions, indicating a slight improvement in the team’s defensive performance.

In a recent interview with Kicker, Toppmöller reiterated his commitment to Zetterer, stating that he would maintain the goalkeeper’s position through the winter break, regardless of future developments. Santos is unlikely to receive an opportunity to take over until at least 2026. Toppmöller remarked, “The plan remains that he [Zetterer] will guard the goal until the winter break. We still believe that Kauã can become a top goalkeeper. The idea was always that he would be our number one. Zetti knew that when he joined us. Zetti radiates calm and confidence. That’s what we need.”
