Mohamed Salah contributed to 47 Premier League goals for Liverpool last season, but his recent performance has drawn scrutiny. Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has advised Liverpool manager Arne Slot to consider dropping Salah, particularly after the team’s disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, where Salah failed to register a goal or assist despite having scored five times this season.

In his latest podcast episode, Rooney stated, “If I were Slot, I’d make a significant decision to impact the team positively. Salah’s lack of defensive contribution is concerning. If you are a new recruit and see someone of his stature not making efforts, what message does that send?”

Last season, Salah made Premier League history by finishing with the most goals and assists, earning the Player of the Season award, coinciding with Slot’s successful debut campaign at the helm, which culminated in a league title following Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.

However, following a busy summer transfer window that saw the arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak for a combined total of £241 million, Liverpool has struggled this season, currently sitting 11th in the league with 18 points from 12 matches. Rooney noted, “They are indeed facing a challenging period. The unfortunate situation surrounding Jota likely impacts the morale of the team. However, there is no excuse for a lack of effort and tackling.”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk echoed this sentiment after the recent loss, asserting that “everyone in the team must take responsibility.” With only one win in their last seven league matches, the specter of Klopp’s era looms large over Slot’s management.

Rooney remarked, “Slot faces a substantial challenge to restore winning performances. When results are poor, Klopp’s name continues to be mentioned. Much like how Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy haunted his successors at Manchester United, Klopp’s presence is felt here. It is crucial for Liverpool fans to look beyond the past and support Slot moving forward.”
