Eugen Polanski, the head coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach, hinted during his pre-match press conference that it was time for captain Tim Kleindienst to make his long-awaited return to the field. Polanski emphasized that he was not concerned with the opinions of the club’s medical staff, as Kleindienst needed to step back onto a Bundesliga pitch.

In a strategic move, Polanski utilized Kleindienst in the least risky manner possible, allowing the 30-year-old to enter a match that had already been decided against his former club, 1. FC Heidenheim. Kleindienst checked in during the 90+1 minute of the second half, managing to touch the ball four times despite his limited time on the pitch.

“Just being back on the pitch is a positive thing,” Kleindienst remarked in the mixed zone following the match. “I thank the Heidenheim fans for their applause. I know it may sound a bit cheesy, but it truly touched me.”

Kleindienst is aware that it will take time before he can participate in matches for longer periods following his significant knee surgery. Additionally, there have been surprising developments within the team since he last played in late spring.

On loan from Hoffenheim, striker Haris Tabakovic was initially seen as a potential flop, having put forth disappointing performances in his first two matches. However, he has since transformed perceptions by capitalizing on scoring opportunities. In Saturday’s victory, Tabakovic scored again, bringing his total to seven league goals this season, a tally surpassed only by England’s Harry Kane and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jonathan Burkardt. Kleindienst praised his teammate in his post-match comments.

“Haris is doing an amazing job,” Kleindienst noted. “I hope he can maintain this momentum. I need another month-and-a-half to two months to be fully ready. Initially, I expect to come off the bench a few times. Competitive football is challenging, and there are still areas I need to improve upon. However, I am comfortable with the role of substitute for now.”
