FC Augsburg approached Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV with a pressing need for a positive outcome. The challenges faced by head coach Sandro Wagner have weighed heavily on the local fans, especially following two humiliating home defeats to Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig earlier in the season. With Augsburg having lost their last three matches at home, the stakes were high as they entered the fixture.

The match concluded with a narrow 1-0 victory over HSV, which, while not a resounding triumph, relieved Wagner from the necessity of defending his position as a new head coach. After the final whistle, the 37-year-old expressed his relief in an interview with Sky Germany.

“As a young coach, it feels great when the team is focused and believes in the path we are taking,” Wagner stated. “That’s the only thing I can cling onto.”

He acknowledged the pressure surrounding the team’s home performances, stating, “We haven’t won much at home this season. We wanted to provide our spectators with an enjoyable afternoon, and we felt the pressure.”

Wagner expressed his satisfaction with the three points gained, emphasizing the team’s hard work and their effective defensive strategies. “We had good interactions within the team, and they worked diligently on their defense.”

Recalling advice from the experienced former Bundesliga and HSV head coach Huub Stevens, Wagner noted, “It’s important to keep a clean sheet when you’re under pressure. He was my role model this week.”

FCA sporting director Benjamin Weber also weighed in during his Sky interview, stating, “I’ll be honest, we really needed this. It feels good not just for us, but for the entire city.”
