Espanyol achieved a significant victory against Sevilla, keeping themselves firmly in sixth place in the standings. Despite not delivering their best performance today, Manolo González’s team managed to overcome their opponents and end a twelve-match winless streak against the Nervión club. Goals from Pere Milla and Roberto Fernández were pivotal in a match where the blanquiazules faced considerable challenges.

Post-match, Coach González expressed his happiness regarding the victory and the team’s effort. He commented on the win, stating, “In the initial minutes, we executed the game plan we had in mind. We recognized the strength of our opponent, and while we initially held our ground, mistakes allowed them opportunities. The first twenty minutes were solid from us, but we faltered afterward. The silver lining is that even on a less than perfect day, we still secured the win.”

He praised goalkeeper Dmitrovic, saying, “When a player is dedicated, works hard, and strives for improvement, it shows on the field. While mistakes can happen, his overall performance has been commendable, and I’m pleased for him and the team. A goalkeeper earning points for the team is invaluable, and today’s match will bolster his confidence. I’m happy for him as his performance reflects his daily hard work.”

González was also critical of his team’s mistakes, noting, “The challenge arises when we start well but concede chances, leading to loss of confidence. We allowed ourselves to be pressured, which frustrated me. We need to avoid complicating matters ourselves.”

He acknowledged the team’s character, emphasizing, “It’s up to the players. I ask them to demonstrate personality. There are challenging moments in matches, and it’s essential to stay alert. Even in difficult times, there are always chances. Today may not have been our best match, but we held our ground, and I want to thank the players for their relentless effort.”

Regarding the benching of Pol Lozano, he clarified, “He wasn’t injured. We decided that Urko and Edu would start based on our tactical considerations. Although Pol had some discomfort, we chose to go with Urko.”

On the team’s current momentum, González stated, “Our focus is on accumulating points. If we reach 42 points, we will set our next objective. As we continue to progress, some seem bothered by Espanyol’s good form. It appears that there are individuals looking for conflict. Espanyol is currently experiencing a solid institutional phase with strong support from both members and fans, among the best in recent times. Sportingly, we are doing well. We could always improve, but fortunately, Espanyol is on a good trajectory, despite those seeking out the negatives.”

Looking towards future matches, particularly against Celta, he said, “We are focusing on the upcoming match in Vigo. Celta is currently in great form, and our priority is to secure a win there.”

Lastly, he reflected on the support from fans, stating, “Everyone appreciates positive recognition. My concern is to be remembered fondly by my supporters. I want to leave a good legacy when I eventually depart. I come here to work diligently every day. Success hinges on doing well, but it also depends on how you resonate with others. I believe that the vast majority value the effort we put in. That is all I seek.”
