Matías Almeyda Reflects on Sevilla’s Defeat to Espanyol

Matías Almeyda appeared at a press conference after the match between Espanyol and Sevilla at the RCDE Stadium. The Seville club suffered its seventh defeat of the season in LaLiga EA Sports, losing 2-1 despite creating significantly more scoring opportunities than their opponents. “I believe the first half was good, with clear chances and solid control. We couldn’t score, and in football, it’s all about putting the ball in the net,” began the Argentine coach.

Regarding the second half, Almeyda noted, “It started with a situation that could have been avoided; we conceded the first goal, and that marked a turning point in the match. Nevertheless, the team responded well, but we made another mistake that led to the second goal. We managed to score one, but it was too late by then.”

On the team’s overall performance, he stated, “I think today we played one of our best matches, regardless of the outcome, of course. The reality is that we had numerous goal-scoring opportunities that we failed to convert; we lacked clarity in many instances, and in others, we faced a great goalkeeper.”

Almeyda also addressed the injuries of players Januzaj and Vargas, saying, “Both experienced muscular discomfort. We should have a clearer understanding of the severity once they undergo tests starting tomorrow.”
