Marcus Rashford has successfully recovered from a bout of flu and is set to return to England this week for Barcelona’s Champions League fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old forward missed Barcelona’s recent 4-0 victory over Athletic Club at Spotify Camp Nou on Saturday, having been unable to train in the days leading up to the match. However, he rejoined his teammates for practice on both Sunday and Monday, ensuring his inclusion in Hansi Flick’s squad for the upcoming encounter.

In a press conference on Monday, Flick expressed his satisfaction with Rashford’s return, stating, “I am really very happy. He came back from a cold, but he’s okay. We will decide tomorrow if he will start or come off the bench. I’m pleased to have him playing for Barcelona. I have followed his career and am consistently impressed by his quality, especially in the box and in front of goal. He has showcased this talent at Barcelona.”

Flick also noted the positive impact of Rashford’s move to Barcelona, highlighting the benefits of adapting to a new culture, enjoying the fantastic weather, and interacting with the local people. “You can see he is smiling a lot. If he enjoys the atmosphere we have here, it’s beneficial for him as well,” he added.

Rashford, currently on loan from Manchester United, has made a significant impact in Europe this season, netting four goals—including two against Newcastle United—and providing one assist in four appearances. Overall, he has scored six goals and assisted eight in 16 matches across all competitions for the Spanish champions.

With Rashford back in the fold, Flick faces a selection dilemma as he regains several key players from injury. The front three against Athletic Club featured Ferran Torres, Robert Lewandowski, and Lamine Yamal, while Raphinha returned as a substitute after a two-month absence due to injury.

Rashford’s return adds depth to the squad, giving Flick five options for three positions, although Raphinha has occasionally played as an attacking midfielder. Additionally, goalkeeper Joan García rejoined the team this past weekend after two months out, helping Barcelona secure their first clean sheet since September. However, Pedri, Gavi, and Marc-André ter Stegen remain sidelined, with Pedri potentially returning when Alavés visits Camp Nou this weekend, while Gavi and Ter Stegen’s returns are not imminent.

Tuesday’s match in London presents Barcelona with an opportunity to recover from a disappointing 3-3 draw against Club Brugge in their previous Champions League outing. Like Chelsea, they currently sit with seven points from four games, placing them 11th in the standings. A win would bring them closer to their goal of securing a top-eight finish.

In a related development, Barcelona is reportedly nearing a long-term contract extension for Eric García. His current contract is set to expire next summer, but positive discussions have led to an imminent agreement.

García has emerged as a key player under Hansi Flick, showcasing versatility in various defensive roles. His renewal will follow strategic contracts for Pedri, Gavi, and Frenkie de Jong, with sporting director Deco now focusing on contract discussions for Robert Lewandowski and Andreas Christensen. Once García’s extension is finalized, he will be among the few members of the current squad with contracts lasting until 2026.
