Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes has been instrumental in keeping his newly promoted Bundesliga team above the relegation zone after 11 matchdays. The 33-year-old, who has spent the majority of his career in lower league German clubs, continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience and skill for Hamburger SV.

Having played a pivotal role in HSV’s promotion last season, Heuer Fernandes successfully maintained his position despite facing competition from high-profile newcomer Daniel Peretz during the training camp.

In 11 league appearances, the Bochum-native ranks as the second most effective shot-stopper in the league, trailing only St. Pauli’s Nikola Vasilj. According to Kicker, Heuer Fernandes is recognized as the top goalkeeper based on cumulative matchday ratings over the first 11 rounds of the season. Although he has managed to keep only three clean sheets, there have been numerous occasions where he stood out as HSV’s best performer on the field.

One notable instance occurred during a narrow 0-1 loss to Augsburg last Saturday. In the post-match press conference, HSV head coach Merlin Polzin acknowledged, “we needed him in order to remain in the game at all.” Heuer Fernandes even ventured forward for a late corner, coming close to netting an equalizer.

As Heuer Fernandes aspires for greater sporting success this season, his exceptional performances suggest he could be in line for a lucrative contract extension when January arrives. After the match on Saturday, he expressed his desire for negotiations regarding his current deal—set to expire at the end of the season—to occur promptly.

“It’s my job to help the team,” Heuer Fernandes stated to Sky Germany following the game. “But I don’t want to wait until April.”
