Matías Almeyda Reflects on Sevilla’s Loss to Espanyol

Matías Almeyda held a press conference after the match between Espanyol and Sevilla at RCDE Stadium. Sevilla experienced their seventh defeat of the season in LaLiga EA Sports, losing 2-1 despite creating significantly more scoring chances than their opponents. “I believe the first half was good, featuring clear opportunities and solid control. However, we couldn’t find the back of the net, and in football, the objective is to score goals,” the Argentine coach remarked.

On the team’s reaction: “The second half started with an action that could have been avoided; we conceded the first goal, and from that moment, it was like a different match. Nevertheless, the team responded well, but we made another mistake leading to the second goal. We managed to score one, but it was already too late.”

Commenting on the team’s performance: “I think today we saw the team play one of its best matches, barring the result, of course. The reality is that with so many goal-scoring opportunities, we need to finish them. We lacked clarity in several instances, and in others, we faced an outstanding goalkeeper.”

Regarding the injuries to Januzaj and Vargas: “Both players experienced muscular discomfort. We will have a clearer understanding of the severity following the medical examinations scheduled for tomorrow.”
