Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes has emerged as a pivotal figure in ensuring that his newly promoted Bundesliga club stays clear of the relegation zone after 11 matchdays. The 33-year-old, who has spent the majority of his career in lower league German football, continues to demonstrate remarkable consistency for Hamburger SV.

Having played a crucial role in HSV’s promotion last season, Heuer Fernandes successfully defended his position against competition from high-profile newcomer Daniel Peretz during the training camp.

In 11 league appearances, the Bochum native ranks as the second most effective goalkeeper in the league, trailing only St. Pauli’s Nikola Vasilj. According to Kicker, Heuer Fernandes has been rated as the league’s top goalkeeper based on cumulative matchday grades after 11 rounds. Although he has recorded only three clean sheets, there have been numerous occasions where Heuer Fernandes stood out as HSV’s best player on the field.

One noteworthy performance came during the narrow 0-1 away loss at Augsburg on Saturday. Following the match, HSV head coach Merlin Polzin remarked that “we needed him in order to remain in the game at all.” Heuer Fernandes even ventured forward for a late corner kick, nearly scoring an equalizer.

While he aspires for further sporting achievements this season, it is likely that the highly effective goalkeeper will secure a lucrative contract extension when discussions commence in January.

In a post-match interview with Sky Germany, Heuer Fernandes expressed his desire for prompt discussions regarding an extension to his current contract, which is set to expire at the end of the season. “It’s my job to help the team,” he stated. “But I don’t want to wait until April.”
