FC Augsburg entered Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV in dire need of a positive outcome. The challenges faced by head coach Sandro Wagner have weighed heavily on the local fans, particularly following two humiliating home defeats to Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig earlier in the season. Augsburg approached the match having lost their last three consecutive home games.

A narrow 1-0 victory over HSV may not have been the decisive triumph fans hoped for, but it spared Wagner from having to defend his position as he navigates his first major role as a head coach. After the match, the 37-year-old expressed his relief during an interview with Sky Germany.

“As a young coach, it feels great when the team is focused and believes in the path we are taking,” Wagner stated. “That’s the only thing I can cling onto.”

Wagner acknowledged the team’s struggles at home, emphasizing the need to provide a positive experience for their supporters. “We haven’t secured many victories at home this season, and we felt the pressure to deliver a pleasant afternoon for our spectators.”

“We are very pleased with the three points,” he added. “I am delighted that our efforts paid off. The team demonstrated excellent cooperation and worked diligently on defense.”

Wagner referenced the wisdom of experienced former Bundesliga coach Huub Stevens, stating, “As he once said, ‘It’s important to keep a clean sheet when one’s back is up against the wall.’ He was my role model this week.”

FCA sporting director Benjamin Weber also expressed his relief, saying, “I’ll be honest, we really needed this victory. It feels good not just for us, but for the entire city.”
