Almeyda Reflects on Sevilla’s Defeat to Espanyol

Matías Almeyda held a press conference after the match between Espanyol and Sevilla at the RCDE Stadium. The Sevilla team suffered its seventh defeat of the season in LaLiga EA Sports, losing 2-1 despite creating significantly more goal-scoring opportunities than their opponents. “I believe the first half was good, with clear actions and good control. However, we were unable to score, and ultimately, football is about putting the ball in the net,” the Argentine manager began.

In his reaction to the match, Almeyda stated, “The second half started with an avoidable situation; we conceded the first goal, and that marked the beginning of another match. Nevertheless, the team responded well, but we made another mistake, which led to the second goal. We managed to score one ourselves later on, but it was already too late.”

Regarding the team’s overall performance, he remarked, “I believe I witnessed the team play one of its best matches today, excluding the final result, of course. The reality is that we had numerous goal-scoring opportunities that needed to be converted. We lacked clarity in many situations, and in others, we faced an outstanding goalkeeper.”

On the injuries sustained by Januzaj and Vargas, Almeyda noted, “Both players experienced muscular discomfort. We will have more information on the severity of their conditions following the medical assessments scheduled for tomorrow.”
