Pep Guardiola has issued an apology following an incident involving a cameraman after Manchester City’s Premier League defeat to Newcastle on Saturday at St James’ Park.

The match ended in a controversial 2-1 loss for City, who felt aggrieved over a penalty decision, a handball appeal, and a tight offside call. This left Guardiola visibly frustrated at the conclusion of the game.

In an emotional moment, Guardiola approached the pitch referee Sam Barrott and also engaged with a cameraman, removing his headphones to communicate directly. “I apologized,” Guardiola stated regarding the incident, although he did not disclose the specifics of their conversation. “I feel embarrassed and ashamed when I see it. I don’t like it. I apologized to the cameraman immediately. I am who I am.

“After 1,000 games, I’m not a perfect person; I make significant mistakes. I do this because I want to defend my team and my club.”

The match also saw tensions rise among players, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma being escorted down the tunnel and Newcastle midfielder Joelinton needing to be restrained by his manager, Eddie Howe. Guardiola also shared a moment with Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães.

“We have known Bruno for many years, and after every game, whether at the Etihad or elsewhere, we always converse in the tunnel. I’m not sure what triggered this. Our paths frequently cross, and I maintain a good relationship with him. I cherish those interactions. I’m an emotional person; I love to express myself with gestures.”

City is set to host Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday, seeking to preserve their unbeaten run in the tournament. Currently, they sit fourth in the group stage standings, and a victory against the Bundesliga team would secure their position among the top eight, advancing towards the knockout stages.

This match will mark Guardiola’s 100th game as manager in the Champions League, a competition in which he achieved notable success in 2023 by leading City to victory against Inter Milan in the final in Istanbul.

Guardiola recalled previous near misses, including a loss to Chelsea in the 2021 final and a semi-final elimination by Real Madrid the following year, where they conceded three late goals in the second leg.

“I realize I’m getting older. Every weekend feels like a milestone,” he reflected, acknowledging Manchester City’s unique record as the only English club to qualify for the Champions League for the past 14 seasons.

“Every season, we have been there, and I hope we will continue to be there next year as well,” he added.

“It’s a special experience for the players, managers, and everyone involved. Competing against the best teams in Europe is invaluable—both in terms of prestige and financial implications. While we have experienced more disappointments than successes, the journey shapes both the team and the club. Sport is challenging; not everything is straightforward.”

Last season marked a disappointing chapter for City, as it was the first time in eight years that they failed to secure a major trophy, facing early exits in the Champions League, finishing third in the Premier League, and losing to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.

Defender Josko Gvardiol shared his sentiments about the previous season, stating, “It was the worst season I’ve ever had in my career. It was painful. I struggled to sleep at night, searching for solutions to help the team and the club improve. While challenges arise, I’m relieved to put that behind us and to have recovered well.”
