Jess Fishlock, a key midfielder for Seattle Reign FC, has recently retired from international play after two decades representing Wales. However, her journey with the Reign continues, as she has signed a new one-year contract that will extend her tenure in Seattle to nearly 14 years.

Reflecting on her return from the Euros, Fishlock shared with ESPN, “When I came back, I felt a shift in my aspirations and direction. My competitive spirit remains intact, and I am determined to secure a championship for Seattle.”

Notably, Fishlock is the sole player remaining from the inaugural NWSL season in 2013 who has stayed with the same team. Her longtime teammate, Lauren Barnes, who also played every season since the league’s inception, retired at the conclusion of the 2025 season after the Reign’s quarterfinal exit against Orlando Pride.

Alyssa Naeher, Chicago Stars goalkeeper, and Sydney Leroux, Angel City forward, are the only other players still active from that inaugural year, having switched teams over the years. While Naeher has yet to announce her next move and is currently without a contract, Leroux took a mental health leave in 2025 and did not participate in the season.

Fishlock played a significant role in the Reign’s successful campaigns during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, which saw them win back-to-back NWSL Shields. She was named NWSL MVP in 2021, has made the NWSL’s Best XI seven times, and holds the record for the most goal contributions in club history with 48 goals and 30 assists.

As she approaches her 39th birthday in January, Fishlock led the Reign in scoring in 2025, tallying six goals and two assists. She expressed to ESPN a renewed sense of joy at the beginning of the 2025 season, noting the influx of young talent and the new ownership’s commitment to the club.

“It has always been about my physical readiness,” Fishlock remarked. “While my footballing knowledge and experience remain, the crucial factor is whether my body can keep pace with my mind. So far, it has.”

Fishlock credited the Reign organization for allowing her to manage her physical condition and take necessary breaks, emphasizing the strong relationships she has forged in Seattle.

Regarding her contract extension, Fishlock stated that a one-year deal is ideal for her to continually assess her physical state.

Reign head coach Laura Harvey praised Fishlock’s exceptional understanding of the game, saying, “Jess sees the game at a level that few players do, thanks to her years of experience. Her tactical insight and ability to adapt in high-pressure situations will be invaluable as we move into 2026.”

Recently, Fishlock announced her retirement from international play after leading Wales to the final stage of the Women’s European Championship for the first time in 2025, becoming the oldest goalscorer in Women’s Euro history.

Despite contemplating her international retirement, she expressed excitement about focusing entirely on her club career, a first for her.

Fishlock’s journey with the Reign has been characterized by both triumph and adversity—three NWSL Shields and three losses in the NWSL Championship. She has witnessed the club’s transitions, including changes in venue, ownership, and branding.

This deep-rooted connection drives Fishlock’s commitment. “Even if I considered playing elsewhere for a trophy, it wouldn’t hold the same significance. Going through this journey with a singular club enhances both the lows and the highs,” she explained.

Her dedication to Seattle is further highlighted by her desire to build her entire career there, stemming from the profound meaning the club holds for her.
