Jess Fishlock, a key midfielder for Seattle Reign FC, has recently announced her retirement from international duty after an impressive two-decade career representing Wales. However, her journey in club soccer is far from over, as she has signed a new one-year contract to continue with the Reign through 2026, marking nearly 14 years with the team.

Upon returning from the UEFA Women’s Euro, Fishlock shared her reflections with ESPN: “When I came back from the Euros, I felt a shift in my aspirations and direction. I have always been a fierce competitor, a trait that remains my greatest asset. Despite the 14 years that have passed, my desire to bring a championship to Seattle is as strong as ever.”

Fishlock is unique in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) as the only player still active with her original team since the league’s inception in 2013. Her longtime teammate, Lauren Barnes, has also been with the Reign since 2013 but retired at the conclusion of the 2025 season, which saw the team eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Orlando Pride.

Among the few remaining players from the inaugural NWSL season are Chicago Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and Angel City forward Sydney Leroux, both of whom have played for multiple teams. Naeher remains under contract negotiations, while Leroux took a mental health leave in 2025, leading to her absence from the season.

Fishlock played an instrumental role in the Reign’s successful 2014 and 2015 seasons, contributing to their NWSL Shield victories, and was awarded the NWSL MVP title in 2021. With a record of 48 goals and 30 assists, she holds the highest goal contributions in the club’s history. In the 2025 season, Fishlock led the Reign in scoring with six goals and two assists, expressing a newfound joy as the team transitioned with a younger roster and new ownership.

“It has always been about my physical condition,” Fishlock stated. “My understanding of the game and experience will never waver; the question is whether my body can keep pace with my mind. Fortunately, it has thus far.” She credits the Reign organization for allowing her to manage her health effectively, highlighting her longstanding relationships within the team.

Reflecting on her one-year contract, Fishlock emphasized its suitability for ongoing self-evaluation regarding her physical condition. Reign head coach Laura Harvey praised Fishlock’s unique tactical insights and her role in elevating her teammates: “Jess sees the game at a level that few others do. Her leadership and experience are invaluable as we aim for success in 2026.”

Fishlock announced her retirement from international play last month, having led Wales to the final stage of the Women’s European Championship for the first time in 2025. She made history by scoring Wales’ first goal in the tournament, becoming the oldest goalscorer in Women’s Euro history.

While the experience revitalized her, Fishlock is eager to focus entirely on her club career. Having been part of the Seattle team through both triumphs and challenges, including three NWSL Shields and three championship match losses, Fishlock has witnessed the evolution of the Reign, including relocations and changes in ownership and branding.

This deep connection fuels her ambition. Fishlock remarked, “There’s something uniquely rewarding about navigating the journey with one club, experiencing both highs and lows. It enriches the victories and deepens the sorrows, forging a stronger bond with fans. I have always wanted to build my career here in Seattle, where the connection holds profound significance for me.”
