omidbasir- FC Augsburg approached Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV in urgent need of a positive outcome. The team, under the leadership of head coach Sandro Wagner, has faced significant adversity, particularly in light of two disheartening home defeats to Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig earlier this season. Augsburg entered the fixture having lost their last three matches on home turf, intensifying the pressure on Wagner.

The 1-0 victory over HSV may not have been a resounding triumph, but it spared Wagner from having to justify his precarious position in his first major head coaching role. After the final whistle, the 37-year-old expressed considerable relief in an interview with Sky Germany.

“As a young coach, it feels great when the team is focused and believes in the path we are taking,” Wagner remarked. “That’s the only thing I can cling onto.”

Wagner further acknowledged the team’s struggles this season, particularly at home. “We haven’t won much at home throughout the season,” he noted during the post-match press conference. “We wanted to provide our spectators with a pleasant afternoon, and we felt the pressure.”

“We’re very pleased with the three points,” he continued. “I’m glad that our efforts proved worthwhile; the team exhibited strong collaboration and worked diligently on defense.”

Quoting experienced former Bundesliga and HSV head coach Huub Stevens, Wagner added, “It’s important to keep a clean sheet when one’s back is up against the wall. He was my role model this week.”

FCA sporting director Benjamin Weber echoed Wagner’s sentiments in his interview with Sky, stating, “I’ll be honest, we really needed this. It feels good not just for us, but for the entire city.”
