Matías Almeyda Reflects on Sevilla’s Defeat Against Espanyol

Matías Almeyda held a press conference after the match between Espanyol and Sevilla at the RCDE Stadium, where the Sevilla team endured their seventh defeat of the season in LaLiga EA Sports, losing 2-1 despite creating more dangerous opportunities than their opponents. “I believe the first half was good, with clear chances and good control. We were unable to score, and in football, the objective is to convert those chances into goals,” remarked the Argentine coach.

Regarding the team’s reaction, he stated, “The second half began with a situation that could have been avoided; we conceded the first goal, which changed the dynamics of the match. Nevertheless, the team responded well, but we made another mistake that led to the second goal. We managed to score one ourselves, but it was too late.”

On the team’s performance, Almeyda commented, “I believe today we witnessed one of the team’s best performances, discounting the result, of course. The fact is that so many goal-scoring opportunities need to be capitalized on; we lacked clarity in many instances, while in others, we faced an exceptional goalkeeper.”

Almeyda also addressed injuries to key players Januzaj and Vargas, stating, “Both experienced muscular discomfort. We will know the severity of their conditions after tomorrow’s examinations.”
