Dortmund’s Defensive Concerns Amid Champions League Challenges

Borussia Dortmund experienced a setback in their recent match against VfB Stuttgart, relinquishing a 2-0 lead before regaining the advantage only to concede a last-minute equalizer at 90+1 minutes. This result has caused them to lose ground to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.

In a press conference prior to Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Villarreal, Emre Can addressed inquiries regarding the team’s defensive performance.

“We need to be present in the final moments of the game,” stated the BVB captain. “While fatigue is a factor, every player must dig deep and exert that extra effort, even if it is challenging.”

Although Dortmund has received praise for their defensive displays this season, their late concession against VfB Stuttgart has raised questions about their mentality. The 31-year-old captain is anticipated to start alongside Waldemar Anton and Nico Schlotterbeck, expressing flexibility in his playing position. “I genuinely enjoy defensive roles,” Can added.

“I appreciate this position as it allows me to see the entire field in front of me. I feel very comfortable there at the moment. However, if the coach decides to place me in the number six role, I will give my utmost there as well.”
