Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward, tragically passed away at the age of 28 following an accident in the Spanish province of Zamora this summer. He had recently married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, just 11 days before the incident. Jota had also been a pivotal member of the Portuguese national team, contributing to their Nations League victory over Spain merely a month prior to his untimely demise.

As tributes began to pour in for the Portugal international, Cristiano Ronaldo expressed his sorrow, stating that the situation felt profoundly unfair. In a heartfelt message on social media, he conveyed his condolences to Jota’s family, emphasizing the unexpected nature of his passing and expressing hopes for strength and comfort for his wife and children.

Various clubs, including Portugal, Liverpool, and Wolves, have continued to honor Jota’s memory, recognizing him as a cherished figure among his teammates. In a touching gesture, Ronaldo collaborated with luxury brand Jacob & Co to create personalized watches for Jota’s Portuguese teammates, as a commemoration of their Nations League triumph in Munich. Ronaldo also ensured that one of these watches was sent to Jota’s family.

Journalist Nuno Luz remarked that this act reflects the genuine character of Cristiano Ronaldo, countering any misconceptions about him that may exist outside of the football community. While the exact cost of the watches remains undisclosed, it is believed they are valued in the thousands of euros. Jacob & Co described the design as featuring a skeleton dial with a custom design, adorned with the Portuguese coat of arms, representing the exceptional spirit of the champions.

Jota’s funeral was held at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Portugal just two days after his passing. The service was attended by numerous Liverpool players, friends, family, and former teammates. Portugal’s head coach, Roberto Martinez, spoke poignantly to the media, highlighting how this tragedy has united the football world. He remarked on the sadness of the day but also acknowledged the solidarity shared among the Portuguese community and beyond, expressing gratitude for the support received.

In the months following Jota’s death, the Portuguese national team successfully topped their World Cup qualifying group, securing their place in the 2026 World Cup in North America. With Ronaldo likely approaching the end of his international career, the team may draw additional motivation from Jota’s legacy as they prepare for the prestigious tournament.
