Dortmund achieved a commanding victory against Villarreal at home during their fifth Champions League match of the season. Striker Serhou Guirassy made a significant impact by scoring twice, while teammates Karim Adeyemi and Daniel Svensson also contributed to the tally, leading their team to a comfortable win over a depleted Villarreal side that played with ten men. This triumph positions Dortmund favorably in the Champions League standings, as they remain level on points with Chelsea and Manchester City following five matches, with Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Inter Milan just two points ahead as they approach their matches on Wednesday evening.

The win not only boosted the team’s confidence but also improved their goal difference after recording a clean sheet for the first time this month. With three games remaining in the group stage, defender Nico Schlotterbeck expressed optimism about their chances of securing a place in the top eight.

“It’s not easy, as I believe we need 16 to 17 points,” Schlotterbeck noted. “With three games left, and two of them at home, I think if we win both at home, we’re through. Scoring four goals today also benefits our goal difference. Furthermore, achieving a clean sheet is significant, as we have conceded a lot in the Champions League this season, making today a successful outing overall.”

Serhou Guirassy, who scored just before half-time and again in the 54th minute, received praise from the team’s captain.

“We came out of half-time stronger, which was crucial. Overall, we limited their chances, and our second-half performance was impressive. Serhou has faced challenges, but he has earned our trust and must deliver as a striker,” Schlotterbeck commented.

Guirassy was indeed the standout performer for Dortmund, steering them to an essential continental victory. He remarked, “This was an important win against a solid Villarreal team. We are very pleased with the result, especially following our defeat to City. Villarreal are formidable opponents, and some moments in the game favored us. Scoring goals is always gratifying, and I’m happy to contribute to the team’s success. We must continue to work hard.”

Svensson, who joined the club this summer from Nordsjaelland after a loan spell last season, netted his second goal of the tournament. He expressed his delight: “We aimed to approach the match with high energy. The first half was challenging, but we maintained our pressure afterward. We were fortunate with the penalty and the red card, but overall, it was a strong performance. Scoring a goal is always a pleasure.”

Looking ahead, Dortmund, under the guidance of Niko Kovac, will shift their focus to the Bundesliga. They are set to face Bayer Leverkusen in a double-header, first visiting their rivals for a Bundesliga match on Saturday, followed by hosting them in the DFB-Pokal on December 2.

A win would propel Schlotterbeck and his teammates past Leverkusen into third place, with the possibility of even climbing to second if RB Leipzig achieves a favorable result against Borussia Monchengladbach. However, securing three points will not be straightforward, as Leverkusen enters the match riding high after their Champions League victory over Manchester City earlier this week.
