Matchday five of the Champions League witnessed Borussia Dortmund host Spanish side Villarreal at the Signal Iduna Park. After a disappointing 4-1 loss to Manchester City in their previous match, Dortmund was eager to recover.

Coach Niko Kovač implemented three changes to the lineup following a thrilling draw with Stuttgart. Aaron Anselmino, Yan Couto, and Daniel Svensson returned to the squad, replacing Julian Ryerson, Ramy Bensebaini, and Maximilian Beier.

Dortmund started brightly, yet Villarreal nearly took the lead when Tajon Buchanan capitalized on a fumble by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. However, the goal was disallowed due to Buchanan being in an offside position during the initial shot.

Despite Dortmund’s dominance in possession, Villarreal created the more significant chances in the first half. Buchanan narrowly missed the target from the edge of the box following a swift counterattack. They squandered another opportunity when Pape Gueye’s well-executed shot from a free-kick routine went just inches over Kobel’s crossbar.

In a striking turn of events, Dortmund took the lead just before halftime. A chaotic moment in front of the goal, following a corner, allowed Serhou Guirassy to find the net from close range. A lengthy VAR review questioned a possible handball against Waldemar Anton, but the goal was ultimately awarded.

Five minutes into the second half, Julian Brandt launched a quick counter, assisting Felix Nmecha, whose attempt was expertly blocked by Renato Veiga. The ball fell to Karim Adeyemi, who was about to score when Juan Foyth handled the ball on the goal line, resulting in his dismissal after a VAR check. Guirassy took the resulting penalty, which was initially saved by Luiz Júnior, but he remained composed to convert the rebound.

Dortmund quickly found their third goal when Adeyemi executed a clever one-two with Brandt. A misjudged clearance from Thomas Partey deflected off Adeyemi, lofting over Júnior into the net.

With ten minutes remaining, Dortmund was awarded a second penalty when Adeyemi was fouled near the byline. Fabio Silva stepped up to take the penalty but struck the crossbar, a disappointing moment for the young forward.

Dortmund concluded the match emphatically with Pascal Groβ delivering an exquisite cross to Daniel Svensson at the far post, who headed home, securing Dortmund’s fourth goal and their third four-goal haul in this season’s Champions League.

This comfortable victory propelled Dortmund to fourth place overnight. With their next Champions League fixture against Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt on the horizon, Kovač’s team will be optimistic about solidifying their position for direct qualification to the knockout stage.
