Sevilla Prepares for Upcoming Derby with Key Player AvailabilitySevilla Prepares for Upcoming Derby with Key Player Availability

Sevilla will have at least four players available for the derby this Sunday: Tanguy Nianzou, Gabriel Suazo, Adnan Januzaj, and Rubén Vargas. The absence of the French player has become a common occurrence, prompting Antonio Cordón to assemble a squad rich in central defenders. The Belgian, Januzaj, is less frequently seen on the pitch, although Matías Almeyda is making efforts to reintegrate him into the team. In contrast, the situations of the Chilean and the Swiss players are more pressing, as they are indispensable in the starting lineup.

Based on recent formations, it is expected that Marcao will once again captain the side as he occupies the left center-back position. The primary candidate to partner him is César Azpilicueta. The Navarrese defender has returned to training with his teammates and is a crucial component in Almeyda’s tactical plans, whether employing a four or five-man defense. Conversely, Fábio Cardoso, Ramón Martínez, Kike Salas, and Andrés Castrín—who started in the last match—are less likely to feature prominently.

Gabriel Suazo and Rubén Vargas are among the three players with the most minutes played for Sevilla this season. The left-back is unique in that he lacks a natural replacement in the squad. In his absence, Almeyda has opted to use José Ángel Carmona on the opposite side, prioritizing him over left-footed players like Kike Salas and Oso. Additionally, while Rubén Vargas is a key player, he competes in a position with numerous alternatives, including Alfon, Chidera Ejuke, Alexis Sánchez, and Juanlu, any of whom could step in as needed.

Ahead of the derby against Betis, Almeyda might choose a lineup featuring Vlachodimos in goal; a four-man defense comprising Juanlu, Azpilicueta, Marcao, and Carmona; a double pivot of Mendy and Agoumé; with Ejuke, Peque, and Alfon in advanced midfield roles; and Akor Adams leading the attack.
