Arsenal demonstrated their serious intent this season by defeating Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. This victory ended Bayern’s impressive 18-game unbeaten streak across all competitions in the current campaign.

Jurrien Timber opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, but wonderkid Lennart Karl equalized just ten minutes later. Both teams showcased equal intensity during the first half, with Arsenal appearing to maintain better control over the game.

However, Bayern struggled significantly in the second half. Their attack failed to assert itself, resulting in only six shots throughout the match, with just two on target. Harry Kane’s return to north London was less than ideal, as he faced frustration against his former rivals.

In contrast, Arsenal tightened their grip in the second half, bolstered by their midfield dominance and effective pressing. Bayern finally succumbed to the pressure after holding firm for the first 23 minutes of the half, with substitute Noni Madueke converting a superb delivery from Riccardo Calafiori in the 69th minute. Gabriel Martinelli sealed the victory eight minutes later, benefiting from a mistake by Manuel Neuer just outside the Bayern penalty area.

This result not only solidified Arsenal’s status as the only team in this season’s Champions League with a perfect record but also positioned them as strong contenders for the title.

In the post-match press conference, Joshua Kimmich acknowledged Bayern’s deserving defeat, although he remarked that Arsenal did not present their most challenging test yet. “It was definitely a deserved defeat. We didn’t perform well with the ball; we weren’t brave or proactive enough,” Kimmich stated. He added, “We fell short physically when defending, and we struggled to handle the number of corners we conceded. This match is crucial for us, and I believe we will learn a lot from it.”

When asked if Arsenal had been the toughest opponents thus far, Kimmich responded, “No, I don’t think so! PSG was our most difficult opponent; Arsenal’s approach is quite different, focusing heavily on set pieces. Against Paris, it was more of a tactical football match.”

Mikel Arteta was visibly pleased with his team’s performance on Wednesday, which extended their unbeaten streak to 16 games across competitions. “I’m extremely proud of what I witnessed tonight. We faced one of the best teams in Europe with presence, authority, and determination, which was my expectation,” Arteta commented. He emphasized the importance of individual performances that contributed to the victory.

Arteta also highlighted the significant impact of his substitutes, noting their readiness and contributions. “Everyone is prepared, whether as starters or finishers. Their performances have been tremendous, especially considering the injuries we’ve faced this season. It’s encouraging to see everyone raising their level, which helps mask some issues we have.”

Despite this defeat prompting many questions, Bayern Munich has the opportunity to silence critics by returning to winning form this weekend as they host St. Pauli at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
