DOHA, Qatar — Portugal secured the FIFA Under-17 World Cup title on Thursday, defeating Austria 1-0 in the final of the 48-nation tournament, where European teams claimed the top three positions.

In the 32nd minute, Benfica forward Anísio Cabral expertly timed his run to stay onside, receiving a well-placed pass across the goalmouth and slotting the ball into an empty net. This goal marked Cabral’s seventh of the tournament, just one short of Austria’s Golden Ball recipient Johannes Moser.

This victory represents Portugal’s first U17 title, achieved during the 20th edition of a competition that FIFA has expanded to an annual event, transitioning from its previous biennial format.

Qatar hosted this year’s tournament and is set to continue as the host for the next four years.

In earlier matches in Doha, goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni made two vital penalty saves, leading Italy to a 4-2 victory over Brazil in a shootout following a 0-0 draw in the third-place match.
