Benteke Bids Farewell to D.C. United, Eyes Future Opportunities

D.C. United had hoped to secure a new contract with their Belgian star, Christian Benteke, but he has indicated through his farewell message that he is ready to move on. In his statement, Benteke expressed gratitude towards his teammates, coaching staff, and fans for their support since his arrival in 2022. He acknowledged the strong relationships he developed during his time in the capital, making it clear that his tenure at Audi Field has reached its conclusion.

Since joining D.C. United from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2022, Benteke has been a pivotal figure in the team’s offense, consistently scoring goals and earning accolades, including MLS All-Star selections and the prestigious 2024 Golden Boot. Over the course of his time with D.C. United, he has contributed to a total of 47 goals and 10 assists, highlighted by a remarkable 30-goal campaign during the 2024 MLS regular season.

Despite his contributions, Benteke’s presence on a largely rebuilding team seemed somewhat incongruous given his veteran status and production levels, particularly as D.C. United finished at the bottom of the Eastern Conference last year with only 26 points.

As he contemplates the next chapter of his career, Benteke is faced with several options. With free agency approaching and discussions underway, he may choose to either sign with another MLS club or explore opportunities overseas.
