FC Augsburg Announces Dismissal of Head Coach Sandro WagnerFC Augsburg Announces Dismissal of Head Coach Sandro Wagner

FC Augsburg’s managing director, Michael Ströll, and sporting director, Benjamin Weber, have publicly addressed the dismissal of head coach Sandro Wagner.

The decision to part ways with Wagner, who is 38 years old, was influenced primarily by his demeanor towards the players. Following the team’s recent heavy loss to Hoffenheim, Wagner’s comments indicated a deep-seated rift within the locker room that seemed irreparable. Augsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj, speaking to Kicker Magazine, expressed the team’s disillusionment, stating, “We just need to start over again. But if you start over every week, one has to keep justifying oneself. It is unacceptable that the opponent shows more determination on the pitch than us. Everyone needs to take a look at themselves.”

In their assessment, Ströll and Weber concluded that the club could not continue under Wagner’s leadership. Additionally, the presence of experienced former head coach Manuel Baum as a potential successor likely influenced the timing of the decision, especially with only three matches remaining before the winter break.

Ströll emphasized the need for change after discussions following the Hoffenheim match, stating, “We realized that there is a lack of belief and conviction that we can turn things around in the current situation.” Weber echoed this sentiment, affirming the club’s commitment to its chosen path and expressing a desire to stabilize and secure points in the upcoming games.
