Deportivo Alavés is looking forward to the opening of the winter transfer market to reinforce its squad. Since FIFA imposed a suspension on Facundo Garcés in September, the team’s defensive situation has significantly weakened, leaving coach Eduardo Coudet with only Pacheco as a specialized central defender. Despite this unusual situation, the team has managed to maintain its status as one of the best defensive units in La Liga.

However, the effective performance of Alavés does not mitigate the pressing issue regarding their central defense. Nahuel Tenaglia has stepped up commendably, and Protesoni might lend a helping hand, but it is clear that signing an additional central defender in January is essential. Consequently, Sergio Fernández has been diligently scouting the market for a reliable defender, which would afford Coudet greater tactical flexibility moving forward.

The defense is not the only area targeted for reinforcement. As stated by the sporting director in recent appearances, the objective is to enhance the squad as much as possible. The team has remained distanced from the relegation zone since the beginning of the season, yet recent performances have been concerning, placing them just three points above the drop zone. This serves as a clear warning that maintaining their league status will be a formidable challenge this season.

Additionally, the winter market should be pivotal for facilitating the departure of Maras. A player who could have addressed some of the central defensive issues, Maras has not been included in Coudet’s plans, as the coach has remained steadfast in his summer commitment not to utilize him if he remained on the team. With the lack of depth in defense, all indications suggest that January will be the month for the Serbian player to seek a new opportunity.
