Canales Addresses Future Amid SpeculationCanales Addresses Future Amid Speculation

Sergio Canales has sought to quell rising speculation regarding his future, emphasizing that he has no immediate plans to depart from Monterrey, despite recent reports suggesting a possible return to Spain.

In an interview with DAZN at a tribute organized by Real Betis at La Cartuja Stadium, Canales was forthright when discussing his current status. “At present, I am under contract and very happy in Monterrey, so that is the situation,” stated the Spanish midfielder.

Canales’ contract with Rayados extends until mid-2026, ensuring his presence with the Liga MX club for at least another season. Although there are no formal discussions underway to extend his contract, the existing agreement provides clarity amidst the ongoing speculation.

Rumors regarding Canales’ future intensified earlier in December when he was spotted meeting with Manuel Higuera, president of Racing Santander, the club where he began his career. Subsequent reports from Spain clarified that the meeting was personal and unrelated to any transfer discussions, a sentiment echoed by Canales himself.

The event in Seville marked Canales’ first return to Betis since his departure in 2023. Reflecting on this occasion, he expressed that the visit was long overdue. “I was genuinely excited. This is my first time back since I left. I don’t think I was ready before, which is why it took so long, but it was very emotional,” Canales explained.

The former Betis captain also noted that while many of his former teammates have moved on, he maintains a close connection to the club from a distance. “I watch them all the time. I’m a Betis supporter even from Mexico. I’m really excited about the season, the squad they have, and the way things are developing,” he remarked.
