The football rumor mill is abuzz as clubs and managers worldwide prepare to strengthen their squads ahead of the reopening of the transfer market on January 1st.

According to reports from The Guardian, Manchester United has focused on securing a new defensive midfielder this January. Potential candidates on their shortlist include Ruben Neves from Al-Hilal, Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, and Tyler Adams from Bournemouth.

The 20-time champions had sought to add a central midfielder during the summer transfer window but ultimately withdrew from negotiations for Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba due to his reported £100 million (€114m/$133m) valuation.

Recently, Amorim revealed that United is also keen to explore opportunities in other positions. The Athletic has reported that the club is making a strong push to sign in-demand Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo. However, it appears United may miss out on the Ghana international, as sources indicate the 25-year-old prefers a move to rival Manchester City next month. It has also been noted that Chelsea has withdrawn from the race for Semenyo after making an initial inquiry, while Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have shown interest in the former Bristol City attacker.

Amorim confirmed that United is actively monitoring potential new signings across all positions. Ahead of his team’s match against Aston Villa, he stated, “The only players we aim to bring in now and at the end of the season are those who fit perfectly into our future. It won’t be a case of immediately addressing the shortfall from three players going to AFCON (Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo). Even if we consider bringing in one player, it may not align with our most pressing needs. I’m focused on the immediate game; we must win and adapt our play without Amad and Bryan, as we’ve lost some crucial characteristics.”

Amorim reiterated the importance of ensuring that new signings are fully committed to joining Manchester United, expressing concerns that the club has not always followed this principle in the past. In an interview with Sky Sports prior to their Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Boxing Day, he remarked, “We have room for improvement and additional players, but we must adhere to our plan. We need to ensure that new players align with our vision; if there are uncertainties, it is better to work with our current squad. We cannot repeat past mistakes and must navigate this period thoughtfully, especially with returning international players and those recovering from injury.”

United aims to regain their winning momentum when they host Eddie Howe’s Newcastle on December 26. Despite a commendable performance, Amorim’s side suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to Aston Villa last Sunday. Prior to that, they engaged in an eventful 4-4 draw with Semenyo’s Bournemouth on December 15.

Newcastle, currently sitting 11th in the standings, has only lost one of their last seven matches across all competitions and could draw level on points with seventh-placed United if they secure a victory at Old Trafford.
