In contrast, the situations surrounding Harry Maguire and Casemiro are far more critical. Maguire’s contract is set to expire this summer after United exercised a one-year extension earlier in the season, while Casemiro’s deal also concludes in June but includes an additional option year favorable to the club.

Historically, the potential exits of Maguire and Casemiro might not have alarmed supporters, given their challenging spells and significant criticism in recent seasons. However, under manager Amorim, both players have experienced a revival, regaining form, confidence, and authority on the pitch. Yet, there remains ongoing debate regarding whether extending their contracts aligns with the club’s long-term strategy.

Casemiro is among the Premier League’s highest earners, and some within the football community question whether a further year at similar wages is justifiable despite his return to form. Meanwhile, Maguire has openly discussed the uncertainty surrounding his future, with reports suggesting he may consider a reduced salary if an adequately structured extension is proposed.

In a pre-match press conference ahead of the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle United, Amorim was asked about any decisions regarding these contracts. He stated, “No, there is no decision. We have a lot to do. We need to understand what is going to happen next season, including potential European games. I’m really happy with them, but I don’t know what the future holds, so we’ll see what occurs by the end of the season.”

Despite the uncertainty, Amorim consistently praises Casemiro, especially for his resilience in the face of adversity. After falling down the pecking order last season, Casemiro has fought back to secure a place in the national team. When questioned about whether the contract situation could negatively affect the midfielder’s performance, Amorim dismissed the concern, emphasizing Casemiro’s dedication in training.

He remarked, “It’s not about the contract situation. When I see Casemiro train, if everyone were as focused on detail as he is, we would be a top team. His commitment, even during set-piece drills, is exemplary, which is why he has won five Champions Leagues. With or without a contract, he remains a top player.”

Looking ahead, Manchester United’s immediate challenge is to break a frustrating streak of results as they host Eddie Howe’s Newcastle on December 26. Amorim’s side narrowly lost 2-1 to Aston Villa last weekend, with Morgan Rogers being the decisive factor, and had previously drawn 4-4 with Bournemouth in a thrilling encounter. Newcastle arrives at Old Trafford in good form, having lost just once in their last seven matches across all competitions. A victory for Newcastle would see them level on points with seventh-placed United.
