In the lead-up to the match between Sevilla and Athletic Club, football took a backseat as the community gathered to honor the memory of Fernando Huerta Jiménez, the young rail worker who tragically lost his life in the Rodalies accident. On the eve of the game, his family placed a jersey bearing his name and a bouquet of flowers in his seat in the Gol Sur section of the stadium.

The Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium later hosted a solemn ceremony where a minute of silence was observed in memory of this dedicated member of the Sevilla family. Following the match, Sevilla’s coach, Almeyda, paid tribute once more during the press conference, dedicating the victory to Huerta.

Thirty members of the Fernando Huerta fan club, SFC Triana Fans, gathered on the pitch to bid a tearful farewell, holding a flag adorned with a black ribbon and embracing one another after the minute of silence. Messages of remembrance, such as “All of Andalucía mourns with you,” “Today we sing for you, Fernando,” and “We will see you in the third ring,” were displayed in the Gol Norte section of the Sánchez-Pizjuán. From the stands, voices echoed, “One day they will reunite to sing from the heavens.”

It is commendable that Sevilla FC rose to the occasion, managing this deeply emotional tribute with grace for the family, friends, and all supporters. It was a day when football took a back seat to paying respects. Rest in peace, Fernando.
