After scoring in Ivory Coast’s 1-0 victory over Mozambique in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener, 23-year-old Amad Diallo showcased his skills once again with a brilliant curled shot on Sunday. However, his efforts were not enough to secure another win, as an own goal by Ghislain Konan resulted in a 1-1 draw, leaving both teams to share the points. Following the match, Amad exchanged jerseys with Cameroonian player Bryan Mbeumo, revealing that the two had spoken prior to the significant encounter.

Amad expressed his thoughts to reporters, stating, “Bryan is a good teammate; a good lad. We talked before the game. I told him after the game, we can change jerseys. I wish him all the best with Cameroon. My focus now is on myself and my team as we prepare for our last game.”

Regarding his goal, Amad commented, “It’s a good goal, but I don’t think it’s one of the best. I was happy, but my priority was winning the match. Nevertheless, the goal holds some significance for me.”

Heading into their final group match, both Cameroon and Ivory Coast have accumulated four points. A draw or a win in their next fixture would secure their progression to the next round.

When asked to compare the intensity of this match to that of rival fixtures such as Manchester City versus Manchester United, Amad noted the distinctiveness of the African context. “It’s different. We are talking about Africa, where Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon are prominent footballing nations. This match was significant, given Cameroon’s quality, with players like Bryan and Carlos Baleba in the Premier League. We anticipated a tough contest, and although we drew, our focus now shifts to the upcoming match against Gabon.”

In club news, following his £71 million transfer from Brentford to Manchester United over the summer, Mbeumo has made a notable impact at Old Trafford. United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, praised the winger’s work ethic and versatility, stating, “He’s a working machine. He excels in transitions and is improving our organization in the final third. The synergy between Amad and Mbeumo is formidable due to their speed and positional flexibility.”

Despite the successful integration of new players, United faces challenges with the absence of Amad, Mbeumo, and defender Noussair Mazraoui, who is representing Morocco. After a recent victory against Newcastle United, placing them sixth in the league, Amorim acknowledged the impending difficulties without key players: “We will face some struggles during this period. While it’s challenging to adjust with only one match, we also see this as an opportunity for other players to step up and contribute to our game plan. We will continue to utilize Amad and Bryan in upcoming matches and adapt accordingly.”
