Ajax Faces Criticism for Failure to Replace HendersonAjax Faces Criticism for Failure to Replace Henderson

Last summer, Ajax bid farewell to Jordan Henderson, who transferred to Brentford. They did not manage to secure an experienced replacement for the defensive midfield role; instead, they loaned James McConnell, who has since returned to Liverpool.

The absence of a new signing to fill Henderson’s shoes has caused frustration within the scouting department. According to Voetbal International, several potential candidates were recommended, but Ajax failed to act on these opportunities. Additionally, the players have expressed their concerns regarding the lack of a successor for Henderson.

Once again, the January transfer window did not yield a new defensive midfielder. Youri Regeer is currently the preferred choice for this position. Ajax had set its sights on Kodai Sano as a dream target; however, they approached him too late. NEC was unwilling to part with him at that stage, especially after the financial situation changed following the sale of Kento Shiogai to VfL Wolfsburg for ten million euros. Consequently, Ajax’s offer of around fifteen million euros for Sano was rejected.
