Ajax s Pursuit of Experienced Midfield LeaderAjax s Pursuit of Experienced Midfield Leader

Mike Verweij is confident that Ajax will strengthen its squad during the winter transfer window. The De Telegraaf club watcher asserts that the Amsterdam side is specifically looking to acquire an experienced leader for their midfield.

Verweij is certain that Ajax will sign an experienced controlling midfielder. He mentions that Oleksandr Zinchenko may be on his way to Amsterdam. Although the Ukrainian has primarily played as a left-back in recent years, he originally began his career as a midfielder, which aligns with Ajax’s current needs in those positions. “Initially, Oleksandr Zinchenko was not brought in for the number six position,” Verweij clarifies in the Kick-off Podcast. “However, it is imperative for them to find a leader in that role, and they will indeed do so.”

Ajax has been seeking experienced players in midfield for some time now, particularly after Jordan Henderson’s departure left a significant gap. The team has lacked a competent controlling midfielder, leading to speculation linking players such as Daley Blind and Manuel Ugarte with transfers to Amsterdam. The need for reinforcement is echoed within the squad, as Youri Regeer highlighted after the disappointing 2-2 draw against Go Ahead Eagles on Saturday.
