Ajax s Struggle Despite Victory Criticism of SubstitutionsAjax s Struggle Despite Victory Criticism of Substitutions

Ajax was on track for a straightforward victory against Telstar on Sunday but complicated matters unnecessarily in the closing stages of the match. This was partly due to the substitutes from Amsterdam, who did not make a significant impact. Analyst Pierre van Hooijdonk expressed particular criticism towards the talented Rayane Bounida.

Van Hooijdonk asserted that Ajax’s talent should be held to a higher standard. “Then Grim thinks: you know what, I’ll make a substitution,” he began his critique regarding the substitutions made by Ajax. “And then opportunities arise for players like Bounida. He sidesteps an opponent but should have passed the ball to Konadu. That would have made it 2-4, putting the game to rest. There were still four minutes left to play. I would grab him by the throat.”

Kees Kwakman also voiced his concerns at ESPN regarding Ajax’s substitutions, specifically pointing to Kian Fitz-Jim. “He was on the pitch for just one minute and let his opponent go. It’s not surprising that Fitz-Jim performed poorly; it’s not the first time. I think Ajax needs to take a stand and say: we can’t continue like this. Just opt for physically stronger players. Perhaps put Sutalo in defense and shift Baas forward.”
