Alan Sugar Critiques Tottenham’s Current Squad and Management

omidbasir- Alan Sugar, who served as chairman and part-owner of Tottenham Hotspur for a decade before transitioning to a television personality, has offered a stark evaluation of the current players representing the club. Renowned for his no-nonsense approach on the BBC show The Apprentice, the 78-year-old expressed a desire to implement similar measures within the Spurs dressing room.

“I think the whole bloody team should be fired, if you ask me,” Sugar stated in an interview with SunSport. “They’re useless. Bloody useless, the lot of them.”

Having sold his remaining stake in the club for £25 million in 2007, following the sale of his electronics company Amstrad to BSkyB for £125 million, Sugar’s critical perspective suggests he believes a complete overhaul is essential to resolve the club’s on-field challenges.

This commentary comes at a challenging juncture for head coach Frank, whose team currently occupies the 14th position in the Premier League table, with reports indicating that the manager is “clinging onto his job” amidst a lack of improvement.

Frank was appointed to succeed Ange Postecoglou after the tumultuous conclusion of the 2024-25 season, during which Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation but managed to secure the Europa League title. However, this season has yet to yield the anticipated upward movement in league standings. Sugar highlighted the precarious nature of their current position, remarking, “They’re getting close to the relegation zone.” The absence of progress following the managerial shift appears to be the primary concern for the former chairman.

In addition to his comments on the team, Sugar noted a significant shift in the club’s leadership, indicating that long-serving chairman Daniel Levy has departed from Tottenham. This transition has placed the responsibility for the club’s strategic direction firmly in the hands of majority owner Joe Lewis.

“It’ll be interesting to see what the new management is going to do, because as you know, Daniel Levy has left. So it’s now in the hands of Joe Lewis, who’s a multi-billionaire,” Sugar stated.

He further advised Lewis on the necessity of substantial investment in the transfer market, asserting that significant financial commitment is essential for success in modern football. “He needs to start throwing some money, some real money at it, to get the top players,” Sugar advised. “And if he throws some more money at it, they’ll do well. It seems to be the only way that all these clubs do, buy players for £100 million each.”

Sugar also addressed a recent disagreement with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, who publicly apologized after suggesting that Tottenham was left in a “total mess” when Sugar divested his stake in the club. Sugar threatened legal action over the remarks, which led to the retraction.

“In 20-odd years of running this show and being the chairman of a football club, I can assure you nothing shocks me with what people say about me,” Sugar commented regarding the incident. He added that he remains largely unaffected by criticism unless it crosses a particular threshold. “I’ve got rhinoceros skin and it’s like water off a duck’s back. Unless someone oversteps the mark a little bit, then they hear from my lawyers, like Mr. Redknapp did recently.”
