Alex Greenwood’s recent contract extension is a significant advantage for Manchester City, as she is a vital player for both the club and the national team. Since joining from Lyon in 2020, the City captain has made 152 appearances, achieving victories in the Women’s FA Cup and the League Cup. Greenwood was also an integral part of the Lionesses’ squad that triumphed at Euro 2025 in Switzerland, starting in all six matches and securing her second European Championship title.

In a statement to the club’s media, Greenwood expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m really happy to stay here. It’s the club I love, and the club I want to be successful at. Personally, I have so much unfinished business, and I love this football club. It feels like home to me now, and I feel this is where I belong. I’m really excited for what’s to come, especially with the new players and the new manager. The start has been positive, but I know there’s still much more potential in this team. I would love nothing more than to lift more silverware at this football club.”

Therese Sjogran, Manchester City’s Director of Football, commented on Greenwood’s importance: “We’re absolutely delighted that Alex has signed a new deal with the club. It’s difficult to articulate how crucial she is, both on and off the pitch. My respect and admiration for her as a player and a person is echoed by everyone at City. We’re excited about the direction this team is headed this season and beyond, with Alex being central to those ambitions.”

Currently, Manchester City is experiencing a strong start to the Women’s Super League season, sitting at the top after eight matches, one point ahead of the defending champions, Chelsea. Although Greenwood has yet to secure a WSL title in her career, she is determined to achieve it this year.

She stated, “Despite my extensive experience, I am still learning as both a captain and a player. I always reflect on myself before advising others. The group is exciting, which is another reason I am thrilled to stay here. We have tremendous potential, and the young players coming in are invigorating and keep us all on our toes.

“I genuinely believe we can achieve our goals, which is why I want to be here. The club deserves it, the team deserves it, and while deserving something is one thing, accomplishing it is another. I am optimistic about this team. We have both short-term and long-term objectives, and personally, I would be remiss if I didn’t say that I really want to win the league with this club.”
