omidbasir- Alexia Putellas, a key player in Spain’s success at the 2023 World Cup and the runner-up at Euro 2025, is reportedly on the verge of joining the London City Lionesses in the Women’s Super League (WSL).

The 31-year-old football star was seen in the stands at Copperjax Community Stadium during the recent match where the Lionesses faced Manchester City, ultimately losing 2-1. Kerolin scored the opening goal for City in the 11th minute, and Freya Godfrey equalized for the Lionesses midway through the second half. However, Bunny Shaw’s late goal secured a 13th victory in succession for Manchester City, who now hold a nine-point lead at the top of the WSL table following Arsenal’s impressive 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Putellas’ attendance at the match raised eyebrows, especially after talkSPORT’s Shebahn Aherne mentioned potential “landmark” signings for London City. She stated, “We’re talking about Trinity Rodman, who recently signed with Washington Spirit for a staggering $2 million a year. However, I have heard rumors suggesting that London City, also owned by Michelle Kang, may be making a significant signing. If it is Alexia Putellas, we are indeed talking about a Ballon d’Or winner.”

Currently under contract with Barcelona until the summer, Putellas has the option for a third year. When asked about her future, she reiterated her dedication to the club, stating, “I’ve always said that I’ll play for Barça as long as the club is interested in me and I feel I can continue to improve every day.”

Barcelona president Joan Laporta commented on Putellas’ future in an interview with Catalunya Radio, expressing the club’s admiration for her role in women’s football and her unifying influence among youth academy players.

In a recent development, Putellas launched a new logo in collaboration with Nike, which combines her initial ‘A’ with two ’11’s, symbolizing her iconic number. She has fond memories of the number 11, inspired by Rivaldo, a legendary Barcelona player. “When I started watching Barça, I remember Rivaldo wearing number 11; it has a special significance to me.”

As the WSL transfer window remains open until February 3rd, speculation continues about Putellas’ potential move, amid various transfers by other WSL clubs. Arsenal, for instance, recently signed Smilla Holmberg, while Manchester City acquired Sam Coffey, and Leicester secured Alisha Lehmann from Como. Notably, Chelsea is yet to make a new signing despite recent player departures.
