Algeria’s goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, has been handed a two-match suspension due to altercations that occurred on the field after his team’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations. However, he is expected to be available for the upcoming clash against Lionel Messi and Argentina at the World Cup.

The Algerian Football Federation announced plans to appeal the various sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football, which include bans for Zidane and defender Rafik Belghali. Belghali has also received a two-match suspension, with an additional two matches deferred. Both players will serve their bans during the qualifying matches for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in September.

These incidents took place following Algeria’s 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the quarterfinals on January 10 in Marrakech, Morocco. The match referee, Issa Sy, required protection from irate Algeria staff and was escorted from the field for his safety.

The Algerian federation reported fines totaling $100,000, citing misconduct by players and staff, attempts by fans to breach security barriers, and fans displaying banknotes towards match officials.

Algeria’s campaign in the 2026 World Cup will kick off against defending champions Argentina in Kansas City on June 16, with their group also featuring Austria and Jordan.
