Ruben Amorim conveyed that Manchester United is far from being competitive at the top of the Premier League table after their recent 1-0 defeat to 10-man Everton on Monday.

Despite having the opportunity to secure a position in the Champions League spots with a victory over David Moyes’ team at Old Trafford, it was Everton who emerged victorious, even after Idrissa Gueye was sent off in the 13th minute for striking teammate Michael Keane.

In his post-match reflections, Amorim stated that his team “deserved to lose” and acknowledged that, despite some recent positive performances, he remains “afraid” of a recurrence of last season, which saw United finish in 15th place due to a series of poor results.

“We are not there, not even close to the level we need to be to contend for the top positions in the league,” Amorim remarked. “Over the past five weeks, everyone has praised our progress, but I consistently highlight that we are not nearing where we should be as a club.

“I am concerned about reverting to the feelings of last season. That is my primary concern.”

Amorim expressed disappointment in his players, admitting he was envious of the tenacity displayed by Everton, even if it resulted in Gueye’s dismissal. He emphasized that he wants to see a similar fighting spirit from his players when they regroup for training at Carrington on Tuesday.

“Fighting is not a negative aspect,” said Amorim. “It doesn’t imply a lack of camaraderie. It means that when you lose the ball, you should fight to recover it to prevent conceding a goal. That was my impression during the match.

“I hope my players will exhibit that fighting spirit among themselves when they lose the ball. That is a positive feeling, not a negative one.

“Again, my players have demonstrated that we can achieve this in many games. However, today we did not. We will strive for improvement in the future. At present, we are extremely frustrated.

“We have training scheduled for tomorrow, and we will prepare for our next match.”

Following the loss to Everton, United finds themselves in 10th place in the Premier League and will next face Crystal Palace away on November 30.
