Amorim s Tactical Shift Amidst CriticismAmorim s Tactical Shift Amidst Criticism

Since taking the helm at Casa Pia in Portugal’s lower leagues, Amorim has steadfastly employed a 3-4-3 formation. This tactical approach has continued to dominate his matches as the coach of Manchester United, despite yielding subpar results. Recently, speculation arose regarding his potential shift to a more conventional back four, a change he implemented during the thrilling 4-4 match against Bournemouth.

In a press conference on Christmas Eve, prior to the clash with Newcastle, Amorim elaborated on his evolving perspective. He acknowledged that fully implementing his desired system would require considerable time and financial resources, stating, “I think in the future we can change the system. To extract more quality from these players, I feel that achieving a perfect 3-4-3 would necessitate significant investments and time, which may not be feasible right now. Thus, I may need to adapt.”

His remarks prompted a flurry of reactions on social media, leading to a tense exchange during a subsequent press conference. When pressed for clarification, Amorim stated, “I don’t want to talk about that. I just focus on the Leeds game.” When asked if he regretted his previous comments, he firmly replied, “No, no, no. But I [don’t] want to talk about that.” Confronted again about his delayed realization, he retorted, “I don’t want to talk about that. But you are very smart…”

United fans have displayed remarkable patience with Amorim amid a disappointing record, but criticism is mounting online. Supporters at Old Trafford expressed their frustration by booing the team after a 1-1 draw with Wolves, who have faced a record-breaking string of losses in the English top flight. Gary Neville was among those who questioned Amorim’s substitutions against Newcastle, particularly the introduction of Leny Yoro and Bendito Mantato in hopes of securing a victory against Wolves. Despite the backlash, Amorim defended his choices, acknowledging the challenges of gaining unanimous support for his decisions.

He asserted, “I understand the team better than anyone. Sometimes supporters may find it difficult to comprehend certain decisions. However, I assess the pitch and recognize which players are fatigued or may struggle in one-on-one situations. My priority is to protect the team and secure victories.”

Following the disappointing draw against Wolves, United now prepares to face an improved Leeds side that is unbeaten in its last six matches and has distanced itself from the relegation zone. Amorim confirmed that his squad will remain without injured players Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, and captain Bruno Fernandes, while Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo are still competing in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Amorim highlighted the dangers posed by Leeds, particularly their speed. He remarked, “They possess significant pace, and we have historically struggled against fast teams. We have proven our capability to win under various circumstances, and we will aim to do so again. We are aware of their tactical shifts; in their last match, they rotated two key starters, showcasing their depth and quality under a skilled manager.”
