Joachim Andersen took his position at the center of Fulham’s defense in their recent match against Nottingham Forest, stepping in for his usual partner Calvin Bassey, who was on duty for Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations. The 29-year-old defender managed to help secure a clean sheet in a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

Despite playing through considerable pain, Andersen completed the full 90 minutes. Less than 24 minutes into the match, he was seen wincing in discomfort after a collision with Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus, which resulted in a painful blow to his hand.

Television footage revealed that Andersen’s ring finger was bent out of position. Jesus, appearing remorseful, stood by as medical staff attended to the Fulham player, resulting in a stoppage of several minutes in the match. After his finger was realigned and bandaged, Andersen quickly returned to the pitch, demonstrating his commitment to the team.

Sky Sports commentators noted Andersen’s discomfort, as he struggled to look at his injured hand. Former Chelsea and England goalkeeper Rob Green, who has experienced similar injuries, empathized with Andersen’s situation.

This match marked Andersen’s 81st appearance for Fulham, contributing significantly to the much-needed victory. Mexican international striker Raul Jimenez scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, further establishing his reputation—he now stands alongside Manchester City legend Yaya Toure as the only player in Premier League history to successfully convert 11 penalties without a miss.

Fulham manager Marco Silva shared his thoughts post-match, stating, “The result is, without a doubt, a massive three points for us. While it wasn’t our best performance, I don’t recall Forest creating any significant chances. They had possession but failed to convert it into opportunities, and we managed the game effectively. It was a professional display from our team.”

Silva also praised Jimenez’s reliability from the penalty spot, commenting on his composure and skill in waiting for the goalkeeper’s movement before striking.

In terms of squad health, Silva reported that Wales international midfielder Harry Wilson is expected to recover after sustaining a knock during a tackle shortly before being substituted. With injuries accumulating and three players absent due to AFCON commitments, Silva acknowledged the need to explore the January transfer market for reinforcements. “We have been discussing this for over a month now. After the last summer, we have recognized what we need, especially given the unexpected situation created by Rodrigo’s injury.”

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Silva also addressed speculation regarding his future, emphasizing that the focus on signing players is not merely about his needs as a manager but rather what is best for Fulham Football Club as a whole.

Looking ahead, Fulham, with Andersen ready to tackle any challenges, faces a string of London derbies against West Ham, Crystal Palace, and Chelsea in their next four fixtures.
