omidbasir- Ange Postecoglou has characterized the dismissal of Thomas Frank from Tottenham Hotspur as a “fair departure,” while also expressing sympathy for Frank’s difficult position within an “environment of uncertainty” at the club.

Frank’s departure on Wednesday followed a troubling series of performances in the Premier League, leaving Spurs just five points above the relegation zone, after managing only two victories in their last 17 matches. Postecoglou, who has faced a similar fate himself in recent months, understands the emotional toll such a situation can take.

“Having been in that position now twice in the last six months, it’s tough,” Postecoglou remarked during an appearance on The Overlap podcast. “He [Frank] can’t be the only issue at the club, and that’s true for every manager. Ultimately, however, it’s our performance that gets us judged.”

He described Tottenham as a “curious club” that has undergone significant changes, particularly at the end of last year, with both himself and Daniel Levy departing from their previous roles. Postecoglou voiced concerns about the uncertainty surrounding the managerial position and the criteria for selecting a new head coach.

“What was the reason for such a major pivot? When Thomas stepped in, what was his objective, and what was the club’s objective?” he questioned. “At the beginning of the year, they stated the goal was to compete on all fronts, yet the club has not done so for quite some time. Moreover, the most influential figure at the club over the past 20 years is also leaving. Did Thomas know he was entering such a situation? I’m not sure. From my perspective, it is a fair departure.”

Postecoglou elaborated on Tottenham’s lack of a clear identity in recent years and noted the considerable impact of star striker Harry Kane’s departure. He pointed out that subsequent managers, including Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, had vastly different styles from Mauricio Pochettino, whose approach had previously seen great success.

“If you evaluate the list of managers, there is no consistent theme in their strategies,” Postecoglou added. “People may underestimate Harry Kane’s influence during that period. He is an extraordinary player. Had I had Harry in the last two years, I am convinced we would have secured a Champions League spot after finishing fifth in the first year.”

He asserted that the challenges posed by Kane’s exit cannot be overlooked, stating, “You cannot simply replace such a player; it’s impossible. When analyzing those managers, it’s important to recognize that while Pochettino had a specific style that fit the club’s DNA, the current direction remains ambiguous.”

Postecoglou reflected on the club’s ethos, emphasizing that despite the motto “To dare is to do” being prominently displayed, the actions taken by the club often contradict it. “What they may not realize is that winning requires taking risks, which is fundamentally part of the club’s DNA.”
