On Friday, Angel City FC announced the signing of defender Emily Sams, acquiring the United States international from Orlando Pride for $650,000 in intraleague transfer funds.

At 26 years old, Sams joins an Angel City team that finished in 11th place in the 2025 season and did not qualify for the playoffs.

“Angel City is a club with ambition, purpose, and a clear commitment to excellence, and that’s what drew me here,” Sams stated in a news release. “I’m excited for the opportunity to continue my growth as a player in an environment that upholds high standards and prioritizes winning, while maintaining a deep connection to its community.

“It already feels like a family, and I look forward to competing for championships in L.A. and playing for the best fan base in the league at BMO Stadium.”

Sams, who was named the 2024 NWSL Defender of the Year, played a pivotal role in leading the Pride to both the NWSL Shield and the league title, triumphing over the Washington Spirit in the final. She received her first call-up to the senior U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) in 2024 and was part of the squad that secured a gold medal in Paris.

“Emily is a world-class playmaking defender who brings invaluable championship experience to Los Angeles,” remarked ACFC Sporting Director Mark Parsons. “She is a true professional with high standards, and her presence will enhance our team-first culture while elevating the performance of those around her.

“We believe our technical staff will help push Emily to new heights, and I am eager to see her impact both on and off the field as we strive for trophies in the upcoming years with Angel City.”

With the NWSL expanding from 14 to 16 teams in 2026, introducing Denver and Boston, the regular season is set to commence on the weekend of March 13, although the detailed schedule for 2026 has yet to be unveiled.
