Antony Issues Apology Following Red Card IncidentAntony Issues Apology Following Red Card Incident

Real Betis winger Antony has issued an apology to the club’s supporters following his sending off during a LaLiga match against Girona on Sunday.

In the 87th minute, with the score tied at 1-1, Antony attempted an overhead kick to control the ball within Girona’s penalty area. Unfortunately, his foot inadvertently struck the face of rival player Joel Roca instead of making contact with the ball.

After a review by VAR, referee Iosu Galech Apezteguía rescinded the initial yellow card and issued a straight red card to Antony.

As he exited the pitch, Antony expressed his remorse through gestures directed at the Betis fans. Although Betis managed to secure a draw, the Brazilian international will be sidelined for the upcoming league derby against Sevilla.

In a heartfelt message on Instagram, the 25-year-old stated, “I am very saddened by the red card. All I wanted was to help my team win. It was a completely unintentional move… I apologize to all the fans who have always supported me.”

Since his permanent transfer from Manchester United in September, Antony has scored six goals in 12 appearances across all competitions. He had previously impressed while on loan at Betis during the second half of last season, earning a consistent spot in Manuel Pellegrini’s starting XI.

Currently sitting fifth in LaLiga, Betis is set to host FC Utrecht in the Europa League on Thursday, prior to this weekend’s crucial derby at Sevilla’s Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.
