Antony Issues Apology Following Red Card Incident in LaLiga MatchAntony Issues Apology Following Red Card Incident in LaLiga Match

Real Betis winger Antony has issued an apology to fans following his red card during Sunday’s LaLiga match against Girona.

In the 87th minute, with the score tied at 1-1, Antony attempted an overhead kick to control the ball in Girona’s penalty area. Unfortunately, his attempt resulted in his boot unintentionally striking the face of opponent Joel Roca.

After a review by VAR, referee Iosu Galech Apezteguía changed his initial yellow card decision to a straight red card.

As he departed the field, Antony made gestures of apology toward the Betis supporters. Although the match ended in a draw, the red card means that the Brazilian international will miss the upcoming league derby against Sevilla.

On Instagram, Antony expressed his disappointment, stating, “I am very sad about the red card. All I wanted was to help my team win. It was a completely unintentional move… I apologize to all the fans who have always supported me.”

Since joining Real Betis on a permanent transfer from Manchester United in September, Antony has scored six goals in 12 matches across all competitions.

The Brazilian winger had previously impressed during his loan spell at Betis in the latter half of last season and has since become a regular starter under coach Manuel Pellegrini.

Currently sitting fifth in LaLiga, Betis will host FC Utrecht in the Europa League on Thursday, ahead of the derby at Sevilla’s Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán this weekend.
